Where is the best place to have my address painted?

Where should I have my address painted and should I have more than one spot painted?

Having your address painted in the right location(s) helps emergency responders find you quickly, saving precious minutes that can make all the difference.

Curb numbers also help ensure you receive deliveries and important mail and help anyone else trying to locate your home, especially at night.

But where is the best spot to paint your numbers? And should you have your address painted in more than one location?

  • On the face of the curb next to the driveway
  • At the beginning of a walkway
  • Next to the mailbox
  • On top of the curb where parked cars would otherwise hide the face of the curb
  • At the foot of the driveway, either centered or to the house side
  • If no curb or driveway exists, consider a flat, hard surface near the entryway to your property
  • On the face of a concrete step can bring the address marking up to eye level and make it easier to see
  • At the top of a concrete culvert if there isn’t a curb

Spots to Avoid:

  • In the middle of the property where parked cars will obstruct view
  • Near drain pipes where water will degrade the paint
  • Under plantings that will obscure your numbers

Our Advice:

Visibility is key, along with aesthetic considerations. Each home is a bit unique, but from our years of experience we have seen all kinds of variation.

  • If cars regularly park along your curb, having an address painted next to a driveway usually solves this problem.
  • Numbers painted on top of the curb as well as the curb’s face will allow your address to be seen even when a parked car is blocking the curb’s face.
  • Your painted address can signal where to find the entryway to your front door.
  • If the walkway/entryway is far removed from your mailbox or driveway, consider having both locations marked.
